Tis the season of holiday indulgence. Its a time to soften a little, letting go of routine and restrictions, and flowing with all that the season has to offer – less time working and more time with friends and family, a little less sugar free and a lot more “yes, please”, and definitely a couple of mid-week glasses of wine.
I have memories of sitting around the kitchen table with my mom and sister each christmas, listening to holiday music, and rolling out enough rum balls to get a horse drunk. At least half were for us and the other half my mom would pass out in small christmas themed boxes to neighbours and friends. They were delicious, and at 8 yrs old, I remember feeling pretty bad ass to be “drinking” .
This year I wanted to revisit that tradition, with the goal of upgrading my moms original recipe. Making a healthier, but yet still super boozy, grain and refined sugar free version. They definitely aren’t your average rum balls, instead of refined sugar I’ve used wholesome dates and honey, and in place of totally nutrient lacking white flour, I’ve subbed in Almond and Cassava flour.
This recipe is quick and easy to follow, making it the ultimate last minute holiday party dessert. Even better, all of the ingredients can be tossed into a food processor, leaving you with only it and a couple of measuring spoons to clean up.
Wishing each of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New year
