If you follow me on my facebook page than you may have caught the latest video that I shared about how I combat acute pain. In this case, specifically neck and back pain. I injured myself on Sunday in a Softball game. Not exactly sure what I did, but I left the game feeling stiff and a slight pinch in my right rhomboid. Over the course of a few hours the pain increased durastically, and was at it’s peak around bed time. I got very little sleep that night, every move woke me with an “OUCH”.
As a nutritionist, I always approach healing anything first from a dietary perspective. I knew that I needed to drop inflammation in my body and increase my intake of nutrients that would support healing- Hello Ketogenic Diet! I’m talking, 75% fat, 20% Protein and only 5% carbohydrate intake for the day. I also knew that I needed to support my bodies natural ability to heal by giving it less “work”- Welcome Intermittent Fasting.
Lets get into a little bit of science behind why I chose to call on these two diet hacks. and then I promise, we’ll get to the delicious, velvetty fat bombs
Ketogenic Diet for reduced inflammation – A ketogenic diet reduces carbohydrate intake in order to force our bodies to use its own stored fat as fuel. The ketogenic diet is void of any sugar, which are super inflammatory. Sugar, in excess, raises our inflammation markers and mass-produces insulin, which signals our body to manufacture and store fat. Whereas when we are eating a diet void of sugar we don’t experience those insulin surges that raise blood sugar and create inflammation. Less inflamamation = less pain.
Intermittent Fasting to promote healing – Intermittent fasting reduces oxidative stress, enhances cellular repair processes and may even be a key strategy for anti-aging and longevity. It does all of this by turning on certain genetic repair mechanisms that enhance cellular rejuvenation and has been studied to be one of the most powerful ways of reducing inflammation, boosting immunity and enhancing tissue healing (9, 11).
The best way to begin fasting is to give yourself an eating window period. I myself am eating between 12pm-8pm. You might find it easier to start with a shorter fasting window, lets say eating only between 10am-8pm, and work your way up to 16 hours fasting a day.
I should mention that I’m eating the same amount of calories that I normally would, just in a shorter period and with different ratios – 75% fat, 20% Protein and only 5% carbohydrate. The idea is not to starve yourself, actually the exact opposite.
Now, onto the Ketogenic Fat bombs. They are a great snack rich in healthy fats and low in both carbs and calories. This combination makes them ideal for getting rid of cravings, keeping you full, and helping you lose weight. These are definitely intended to eat straight up as a snack, but are also delicious blended with hot coffee for a creamy, brain powered brew.
These little guys are my favourite, I think of them as my Dinosaur fat bomb army, armed and ready to fight off sugar cravings!
