This Blog post is brought to you by the Power of ACV! If you don’t already know, ACV stands for Apple Cider Vinegar. ACV is a pretty facinating liquid, one that I incorpoate into my daily life and think that you should too. It’s not a new concept, actually, Hippocrates, the father of medicine, used ACV 2000 years ago for wound cleaning.
What is ACV? Apple Cider Vinegar is made by simply crushing up apples, adding some yeast and letting the natural wonder of fermentation work its magic.
Why is it so great? The benefits of apple cider vinegar come from it’s powerful healing compounds which include acetic acid, potassium, magnesium, probiotics and enzymes.
Supports the immune system – ACV has an anti-microbial effect, meaning that it can help to kill bacterial and fungal infections. Acetic acid has the ability to kill dangerous “bad” bacteria, and at the same time to foster the growth of beneficial “good” bacteria.
Weight Loss– ACV has been researched and shown to help people lose weight. In 2009, The Bioscience, Biotechnology and Biochemistry journal published a study finding that drinking it for just three months caused significant declines in body weight, abdominal fat, waist circumference, and triglycerides. (Dilute 2 tsp in 8oz of water and drink 15 min before each meal.)
Detoxifies the Body – ACV is a liver and lymphatic tonic which can help detox your body.
Regulates Your Bodies pH – like lemons, although acidic on the outside of the body, ACV is extremely alkaline once digested. Balancing your bodies pH can reduce your risk of chronic illnesses like cancer and will supercharge your day with energy.
Antiseptic (natural antibiotic) – Acetic acid, the main component of ACV has been proven to prevent the growth of disease-causing microorganism and has been used as a local antiseptic for more than 2000 years.
Prevents Heart Disease and Stroke – Studies on animals showed that apple cider vinegar can lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure. (PubMed)
Fights Diabetes – Recent large-scale trials have shown ACV to have numerous benefits for insulin function and blood sugar levels. 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before bedtime can reduce fasting blood sugars by 4% (American Diabetes Association) and improve insulin sensitivity during a high-carb meal by 19-34% and significantly lowers blood glucose and insulin responses (American Diabetes Association)
Skin Treatment– Wounds, warts, nail fungas, eczema, Acne and more… because of its anti-microbial activity it has a strong ability to kill infections and balance the skin. Use it as a toner. ACV has a pH of 3 and when diluted, the acidity from the toner helps bring your skin’s pH back to its normal levels. (use 1 part ACV to 2 parts water)
Hair Health – Makes an awesome hair conditioner as it gives your hair a more dazzling shine and Stimulates hairgrowth by unclogging pores.
Household cleaner – Because of its antimicrobial activity it can be used as an organic household cleaner. Clean your bathroom counters, cabinets, sinks and most surfaces with a mix of equal parts apple cider vinegar and water (add some Essential oils if you’d like).
What Brand Do I Use? BRAGGs. If you can’t find BRAGGS, look for organic, unfiltered, “with the mother”. The WHAT? yes, the mother! When you look at your bottle of ACV you will see a cloudy dense liquid at the bottom of the bottle. That right there ladies and gentlemen is the mother, and thats where the magic is at. Its comprised of strands of proteins, enzymes and friendly bacteria that hold most of the key nutrients.
From Hiccups to relieving allergies, I’ve only really scratched the surface with the healing powers of ACV. Try it out for yourself, and if you discover a new way to incporporate it into your life, let me know!
